If you like defense and penalties, you got your fill and then some in the 7-3 Kenston defeat at the hands of Mayfield.
The game began with three forced turnovers in the span of six plays. The Bombers fumbled on their first offensive play and on the every next play, the Mayfield quarterback was intercepted by Ethan Burge.
Mayfield then intercepted Michael Cieslak to set up a 48-yard touchdown pass that gave the early 7-0 lead to the Wildcats.
On the ensuing kickoff, Bobby Hairston ran it back 78 yards for a would-be touchdown for naught as a questionable illegal block was called around the Mayfield 10-yard line that nullified what may have been the game-tying score.
Instead, Kenston could only muster a career-long 40-yard field goal from Ethan Dennis to finish all of the scoring for the evening.
The rest of the night was characterized by some stout defense on both sides and an inordinate amount of penalties issued to both squads. Mayfield was flagged for penalties nine times at an 80 yard clip, while Kenston was tagged 14 times for 115 yards. The yellow laundry unfortunately took away from some amazing effort from both teams.
Will Hamm led the offensive attack for the Bombers, toting the rock 26 times for 168 yards rushing.
On defense, defensive back Liam Cufr had an impressive showing with four tackles, a QB pressure, and two pass breakups. Jake Rostocil led the team in tackles with eight including one for a loss and also added three hurries to lead a unit that surrendered only 217 yards.
Kenston will next face Revere on October 16 in Richfield with a potential playoff spot on the line for the Bombers - a loss would almost assuredly eliminate them from the hunt as they currently stand in 14th, just outside the top-12 finish needed to qualify.
