Kenston defeated new Suburban League rival Aurora in resounding fashion by a score of 21-8. The Bombers dominated on defense and special teams and made timely plays on offense to pull away from the Greenmen.
The first quarter represented a lack of firepower by both teams and ended with the score knotted at zero. However, Kenston struck first at the start of the second quarter, capitalizing on a deep pass play from Michael Cieslak to Kahlil Hinton for 28 yards. Five plays later, senior fullback Tucker Meeks drove his way into the end zone from three yards out to give Kenston a 7-0 lead.
On the next drive, Aurora drove deep into Kenston territory and attempted to get on the board with a field goal. Bobby Hairston had other thoughts though, as he leapt and blocked the attempt to keep the shutout going for the defense.
Both teams stalled on offense for the rest of the half as well as through the end of the third quarter as the score remained 7-0.
At the start of the third, Cieslak hit Meeks on a wheel route for 29 yards that set up a 17-yard touchdown run by Will Hamm to make it 14-0 Kenston.
On the next drive, Kenston had its lone true defensive lapse, allowing a Grennmen runner to score on a 79-yard TD run. A two-point conversion brought Aurora within 14-8.
Kenston kept it on the ground to try and run out the clock and Hamm added 34 more yards rushing before the drive stalled. On fourth down, the Bombers lined up for a punt but when the ball was snapped, the upman Jake Rostocil grabbed the snap and sprinted 36 yards to paydirt on the fake.
With Kenston leading 21-8, the defense came up big one more time and forced a turnover on downs to end the contest.
Cieslak finished the game 6-for-12 for 113 yards and an interception passing. Hamm carried the ball 31 times for 178 yards and a touchdown. Hinton led all receivers with three grabs for 71 yards.
On defense, Meeks was all over the field recording 10 tackles, two sacks, and four QB hurries. Rostocil hit double digit tackles as well with 11. In addition to the big field goal block, Hairston also made nine tackles.
With the win, Kenston now sits in 10th place in Region 9 (12 qualify) of the OHSAA playoff rankings with three games to play. They will next host undefeated Mayfield for its homecoming game on October 9.
